• About Us

The George Weston Ltd. Centre for Sustainable Supply Chains aims to become a leading hub for management education, applied research, and industry collaboration at the Schulich School of Business.

Launched in May 2021, the goal of the Centre is to bring together diverse stakeholders to explore how best to create and secure supply chains facing major challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, supply disruptions, and the need for greater social inclusion.

The Centre is made possible through a gift from George Weston Ltd. and is a recognized Centre of Excellence at the Schulich School of Business.

What are Sustainable Supply Chains?

Historically, organizations have been focused on maximizing only the financial performance that can be extracted from managing the relationships between who they directly buy from and sell to. When product flowed money also flowed. From farms and mines to factories and mills, warehouses and distribution centres to stores and your front door. Along the way, networks of planes, boats, trains, and ships kept everything moving quickly and efficiently. While this has been good for profits, at least in the short term, it has not always been good for a safe and healthy workplace, community, and natural environment needed to do business in the long run.

Sustainable supply chain management attempts to achieve the balance of a triple bottom line for individual organizations and a livable planet for all. It acknowledges that talent and resources are finite and that they should not be wasted. That cooperation is the path to resolving conflicts and hard trade-offs between stakeholders. And, transparency provides opportunities for solutions to major issues like climate change, equality of opportunity and security of supply. Sustainable supply chains are a work-in-progress requiring change leadership, a highly skilled workforce and not a small amount of courage to get the job done.
