Presenting the 2024 Spotlight on Research Annual Report

Our annual Spotlight on Research reports highlight the research achievements of Schulich School of Business faculty members.

This year’s report (our 15th edition!) covers research achievements from 2024 –  a banner year for Schulich, its faculty, and its Research Office.

Our Spotlight on Research annual report provides a comprehensive overview of our faculty’s research, research grants and other research-related activities at the School. In addition to celebrating our faculty’s achievements, each Spotlight on Research contains several long-form pieces which illustrate why Schulich stands out as a globally respected academic research centre.

Highlighting the research achievements of Schulich School of Business faculty members from 2024, the 15th annual Spotlight on Research covers a banner year for Schulich, its faculty, and its Research Office.

In the words of Dean Detlev Zwick, “Research excellence is foundational to Schulich’s mission and central to our vision of shaping business education and practice through bold ideas and rigorous scholarship” – and our faculty’s achievements prove it.

What are we most proud of? It’s hard to choose, but, if we *had* to pick a few highlights:

  • Team training and business learning as a teamwork brainstorm concept or brainstorming idea with 3D illustration elements.

    Our faculty secured a record $1.67 million in research funding - the highest amount in our School’s history – and submitted a record number of grant applications.

  • Analyst working with computer in Business Analytics and Data Management System with KPI and metrics connected to the database for technology finance, operations, sales, marketing. Data analysis.Ai

    Our faculty’s dynamic research continues to be published widely in leading journals and is advancing knowledge in fields as diverse as climate finance and consumer behaviour to AI and equity in organizations. In fact, our school is #1 rated in Canada for both field-weighted citation impact and top-tier journal impact.

  • Two businesswomen engaged in a discussion at a modern office table. They are collaborating on a project with documents and laptops.

    Our biennial Research Day brought together faculty from across disciplines to share their research in a series of lively academic panels and saw two faculty members recognized for their efforts with the Dean’s Research Impact Awards.

  • Young woman using smart phone,Social media concept.

    Our research office explored new avenues to promote and communicate our research to wider audiences, both in and out of academia, through the development of a quarterly research newsletter, promotion of academic publications via media releases and social posts and our new Research @ Schulich podcast.

Spotlight on Research

In addition to celebrating our faculty’s achievements, this year’s Spotlight on Research contains several long-form pieces which illustrate why Schulich stands out as a globally respected academic research centre. These include:

  • A profile of faculty members Winny Shen, Ivona Hideg, and Brent Lyons (among others) from Schulich’s Organization Studies area, who are “rewriting the rules of work” through their cutting-edge research on human behaviour in the workplace;
  • An overview of work being done by faculty from Schulich’s Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business (COERB) , who are redefining the relationship between people, planet, and profit through ground-breaking sustainability work championed by professors like Olaf Weber, Geoffrey Kistruck, and James McKeller;
  • A look at how forward-thinking accounting research overseen by Accounting Professors Dean Neu and Gregory Saxton has successfully combined Big Data analytics, AI and qualitative methods to conduct cutting-edge social and environmental accountability-based research;
  • A look at how Finance Professor Yelena Larkin’s unique “product first” approach to financial research has “flipped the script” in the field of finance research, and;
  • Profiles of two *very* unique books published by Schulich faculty in 2024, namely, Finance Professor Moshe A. Milevsky’s 18th (!) book, which examines the unique (and somewhat unknown) religious roots of longevity risk sharing, and Operations Management & Information Systems Professor Julian Scott Yeomans’ new book covering a groundbreaking new approach to sensitivity analysis.

All this (and more) in this edition of the Spotlight on Research 2024.

We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it!
