Krembil Centre Launch Summit – Leading the Way Post-Covid Krembil Centre Launch Summit – Leading the Way Post-Covid

On September 23, 2021, Schulich’s newly established Krembil Centre for Health Management and Leadership, in collaboration with Deloitte, hosted our launch event to celebrate leadership and help reshape the best practices in our industry. Robert Krembil (MBA ’71, Hon LLD ’00) and the Krembil Foundation, Schulich Interim Dean Detlev Zwick, and Centre Chair/Director Joseph Mapa, along with health sector colleagues, and the Schulich community, joined the thought leadership event to explore the future of healthcare in a post-pandemic world. President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton, and Dean Emeritus Dezsö J. Horváth provided introductory remarks at the start of the event.

Covid-19 has had an extraordinary and profound impact on all sectors, especially healthcare, the “front-line” sector. Albert Einstein said “in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” – the opportunity to learn, the opportunity to grow and the opportunity to build a better future state. Effective leaders embrace this opportunity.

The Launch and Leadership Summit took stock and reflected on the ideas of renowned thought leaders in four vital and timely areas of healthcare:

    • Long-Term Care and the Impact of COVID
    • The Digital Future of Healthcare
    • The Role of AI and Data Analytics
    • Reimagining the Healthcare Workforce

Thank you to everyone who participated in the summit. For those who were unable to attend, the recording is available below.

Krembil Public Healthcare Internship Program

An integral part of this Centre is the Krembil Public Healthcare Internship Program that allows Health Industry Management Program (HIMP) graduates from the MBA program and Master of Health Industry Administration students to spend 10 weeks to 16 weeks during May to September with a healthcare employer – learning, experiencing, and contributing to the healthcare industry under the mentorship of senior healthcare leaders.

The learning-on-the-job experience offers hands-on training that complements academic studies at Schulich and enhances a student’s career path. Three successful applicants will be recognized with a “Krembil Public Healthcare Internship Award” of $15,000 each.

Krembil Scholars Program

The Scholars Program will continue to support the Robert Krembil Scholarship of Merit, which has been expanded to include new scholarships for Master of Management students. In addition, the Program will add a new stream of the Robert Krembil Scholarships of Merit for students enrolled in the new Master of Health Industry Administration (MHIA) program, targeted for launch in September 2023, as well as for MBA students specializing in Health Industry Management.

Research

As a center of excellence, research and knowledge transfer are integral to the Centre’s mission. The principal focus of the research will be on Adaptive Management and Leadership – the skills and management practices necessary for achieving high-performance at all levels of an organization.

To this end, the Centre is fortunate to have Dr. Abi Sriharan joining us as Krembil Centre Research Director and Senior Scientist, whose current research focuses on three research themes. The first, Leadership as Adaptive Strength, explores the relationships among sensemaking, creativity, and innovation, more specifically, the kind of adaptive skills necessary for leading during a crisis. The second, Systems Leadership, explores how leaders utilize collective intelligence to build high-performing collaborations and lead systems-level transformation. The third, High Performing Women, is a study of women’s experiences in leadership roles to explore the concepts of stress, burnout, and work-life balance.

We also plan to engage with other faculty at Schulich and other departments (e.g., Faculty of Health) who are also thought leaders in this area. It is our intention to create an Associate Research Category as a framework for these collaborations.

  • A MESSAGE FROM THE CENTRE CHAIR

The development of a world-class education, research and sector outreach hub has been an inspiration for many years and we are grateful to the Krembil family for enabling such a seminal and consequential initiative for our students, faculty and the healthcare community.

Healthcare has been undergoing rapid change and innovation and the pandemic has underscored significant challenges and opportunities, particularly the indispensable role of leadership and management.

The Krembil Centre for Health Management and Leadership has been created to cultivate high performance leaders who bring integrity, innovation and a strong change agenda to the health sector. Our inaugural summit starts this journey. There are many other plans in place including a new 12-month Master of Health Industry Administration (MHIA).

We embrace this mission and look forward to helping shape this dynamic sector with the next generation of healthcare leaders.
