It seemed that no matter how early I arrived or how late I left Schulich, Bela and/or Yvonne was there at her desk. I would wave or pop in to say, “Time to go home!” (Often this happened around 7 p.m. as I was about to descend the stairs to teach for the evening.)

Mornings and evenings, there was always a warm smile and a kind word from Bela. Managing the Dean’s schedule was no easy task but, on time or not, there was always a smile on her voice when Bela said, “The Dean will see you now.”

It is that experience of friendship, understanding and grace that defines Bela for me.

Bela, it has truly been a pleasure working with you. I hope that you will find enjoyment and peace in retirement. I can say, for sure, that it is well-deserved and that I will miss you.

Wishing you everything wonderful.

With fond regards,
Joyce
