After completing her undergrad at Schulich over a year ago, Svetlana Mamaeva has continued setting ambitious goals for herself.

She is currently competing in the biggest beauty pageant in Canada, pursuing a graduate certificate at an accredited Harvard program, doing charity work for Operation Smile, while balancing a full-time job in the energy sector.

Last year Mamaeva won her first provincial title and based on the feedback received from the organization, she decided to take a chance and compete for the prestigious title of Miss Universe Canada 2019.

With over 50 other delegates across Canada in this year’s competition, she enrolled in a Business Communications graduate certificate program to sharpen her public speaking and presentation skills.

“I enjoy doing pageants because it is no longer just about physical appearance,” shared Mamaeva. “They are looking for a spokesperson for their organization who will raise awareness for important causes”.

Mamaeva’s interest in pageantry was rooted from a young age. She represented her home country, Moldova, internationally at Mini Miss World and won second place. She took a break from pageantry when she moved to Canada to pursue her education.

She credits Schulich for giving her the skills and confidence to take on challenging goals. “One of my proudest accomplishments is graduating with an honours degree from Schulich. My degree has been highly respected by the employers and helped me get two full time job offers shortly after graduating.”

Once the competition concludes, Mamaeva is planning to return to Schulich to do her Accelerated Master of Business Administration to take her education and career to new heights.
