Emily Nield

Last month, Emily Nield (MBA ’20) was awarded “Young Leader of the Year” by the Canadian Real Estate Forums, Canada’s leading forums with the focus on real estate trends, strategies, risks, and opportunities.

Emily helped develop her company’s, Epic Investment Services, first climate change strategy that aims to decarbonize the company’s buildings while preparing them for the impacts of climate change. This strategy will be applied across the portfolio comprising of 30+ million square feet of space in office, retail, industrial and multi-family properties across the country.

“I am honoured to be receive this award from the Canadian Real Estate Forums,” said Nield. “My company has provided me the opportunity to flourish in their sustainability department and I am grateful to be part of their wonderful team.”

Emily graduated from Schulich’s MBA program with a specialization in Sustainability. The Centre for Career Design (CCD) helped her obtain an internship at Epic Investment Services after her first year. Upon completing her internship, she knew that she wanted to work in Commercial Real Estate and sought out Professor Avis Devine’s course “Sustainable Cities”.

“Schulich gave me the skills that I needed to succeed in my career,” expressed Nield. “The wide variety of courses at Schulich exposed me to numerous careers choices and Schulich is the only school to offer this unique perspective of how Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) influences all aspects of real estate and development.”

While completing her masters degree at the University of Tennessee in geology, Emily worked as a Research Assistant at NASA in the Planetary Aeolian Laboratory, a facility set up to study how wind shapes the surface of planets and moons in our solar system. She also studied Titan, the largest moon of Saturn and calibrated the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS),  the sole Canadian instrument on NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

Not only did Emily’s win the prestigious “Young Leader of the Year” award, she is also a co-author of the article “Managing ESG and Climate Risk: The Economic Opportunity of our Generation” for the Canadian Real Estate Forums.
