Announcing Updates To SSHRC’s Aid To Scholarly Journals Grants
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s (SSHRC) 2025 Aid to Scholarly Journals (ASJ) funding opportunity is transitioning to support journals that will offer free and immediate access to content (immediate open access [OA]). This change aligns with the current review of the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications. The updated policy will require that any peer-reviewed journal publications arising from agency-supported research be freely available at the time of publication. The transition of the ASJ will help support free and fast access to digitally published Canadian social sciences and humanities research results for readers throughout Canada and around the world.
The next ASJ competition will be launched in June 2025, with the deadline to submit applications in September 2025. Results from the 2025 ASJ competition will be announced in March 2026.

SSHRC Launches New Pilot Funding Opportunity: Policy Innovation Partnership Grants
SSHRC has announced the launch of a new pilot funding opportunity: Policy Innovation Partnership Grants. Valued at up to $6 million over 15 years, these grants will support a partnership between a postsecondary-based research entity and one or more government departments to establish a long-term research program focusing on specific topics in an area of importance to Canada and public decision-makers.
If the pilot is deemed successful, the funding opportunity will be offered periodically, subject to the availability of funds. Each competition will focus on a new target area where research in the social sciences and humanities is well positioned to make an impact. The first competition targets research that supports and informs public policy aimed at boosting Canada’s productivity.
The funding opportunity has been designed to foster long-term, high-impact research for consideration in policy development. The objectives emphasize collaboration, data work, and capacity building. The successful partnership will have significant flexibility with the scope, priorities, and activities of the research program to adapt to new developments and changing circumstances, as needed, over the duration of the grant.
The funding opportunity will use a single-stage application process, and only one partnership will be funded per competition. An impact review will be conducted every five years in order to assess the relevance of the partnership and determine whether funding will continue.
The application deadline is September 10, 2025, with an anticipated award start date in January 2026.
Should you have any questions, please contact at partnerships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca or consult the funding opportunity description.
Update on CIHR’s Transition to a Narrative-style CV
CIHR recently announced that we are gradually transitioning to a new narrative-style tri-agency CV for our competitions and moving away from the Canadian Common CV (CCV). This new CV format was developed following extensive consultation with users. The narrative style allows applicants flexibility to contextualize the research contributions that best highlight their expertise and impact.
To provide sufficient time to adapt to the new CV format, the new tri-agency CV will not be used for the Fall 2025 Project Grant competition.
CIHR acknowledges that this is a big change—one for which the research community needs time to prepare. Our goal is to introduce the new tri-agency CV in the Project Grant competition beginning with the Spring 2026 competition, though this may be delayed if the community needs more time to become acquainted with the new CV style.
Over the next year, we will use the tri-agency CV in some competitions, with which CV to use clearly marked in the funding opportunity. This will give us the chance to continue to engage with members of the research community, including Project Grant applicants and peer review committee members, to refine the new template and its components.
The goal is to ensure that the template is effective for both applicants and reviewers while providing support and guidance for a smooth transition.
Please familiarize yourself with the new CV template, instructions and Frequently Asked Questions.
CIHR will also be holding Ask Me Anything webinar sessions where you will have a chance to ask questions about the new CV format.
