Schulich’s Supply Chain Case Competition Tackles Food Waste

In February 2025, Schulich hosted the 2nd annual Sustainable Supply Chain Case Challenge, an innovative case competition for graduate students to tackle emerging challenges in supply chain management. This year, the competition expanded nationally, with five partner institutions participating, including Concordia University, McMaster University, the University of British Columbia (UBC), the University of Toronto, and York University.
The year’s challenge focused on food waste reduction strategies for one of Canada’s leading grocery retailers, with the goal of achieving Zero Food Waste by 2030. The business case was developed in collaboration with Lead Sponsor, Loblaw Companies Ltd.

Seventeen teams competed across two rounds, with three Schulich teams advancing to the finals to present their solutions live to a panel of industry judges, which included: Frank Massa, Sr. Director of Fresh Replenishment at Loblaw, Rhea Panjabi, Director of Supply Chain at Loblaw, and Gary Newbury, Strategic Advisor and Founder of RetailAID Inc. (on behalf of CITT). The winning team, Supply Chain Titans—comprised of MBA candidates Ankit Chauhan, Tejasvi Raj Sagar, Praatika Mehra, and Mustapha Wahab—took home the top prize of $1,500 CAD.
The event was organized by the George Weston Ltd. Centre for Sustainable Supply Chains with promotional support from Schulich’s Supply Chain and Operations Management Club (SCOMC). The challenge was made possible through the generous support of industry sponsors, Lead Sponsor, Loblaw Companies Limited, and Partner Sponsor, CITT.
