Schulich makes finals in AI EarthHack
More than 51 Schulich students participated in the The GenAI Competition: AI EarthHack – a partnership initiative between the Digital Data Design (D^3) Institute at Harvard and DotsLive, which was founded by a Schulich alumnus Anferny Chen (IMBA ’12). The competition aims to foster innovation, showcase talent and promote ethical use of artificial intelligence. Three teams from Schulich got shortlisted in the competition (from the MMAI and Tech MBA), and one MMAI team made it to the finals: Olivia Wei, Leo Xiaolu Xu, Shaokun (David) Zhang and Yuxing Zhang.
“Harnessing AI’s power to build a more sustainable future presents both intrigue and challenge,” said Wei (MMAI Candidate ’24). “Delving deep into generative AI solutions for business sustainability, our team leveraged a mini-scrum framework to maximize efficiency and collaboration with diverse skills; this approach largely contributed to our success in the 36-hour competition. Securing a position in the finals among global teams embodied an esteemed honor: it condensed an odyssey marked by fervent collaboration, innovation — and experiential learning.”
Hackathons focused on sustainability and AI play a pivotal role in addressing some of the most pressing global challenges. These innovative events bring together creative minds to develop cutting-edge solutions that harness artificial intelligence to drive environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
“Seventy percent of the 1100+ participants were from engineering schools, including MIT, Berkeley, and CMU,” said Chen, Founder of GenAICompetition.com and co-founder/CEO of DotsLive. “Seeing a team from the Schulich School of Business make it to the final is exciting. The students also shared how their capstone project from the Master of Management in AI program prepared them for the technical skills and applied knowledge needed for this hackathon.”
