Melody Zhong’s Journey From Intern to Full-Time Employee at Umbra
Meet Melody Zhong, MBA ‘24, who has secured a full-time role at Umbra on the heels of her recent internship.
Zhong’s journey to becoming a Media Specialist at Umbra is a testament to the importance of strategic networking and effective resource utilization in career advancement. Guided by the Centre for Career Design’s Industry Advisor, Glan Chen, and Corporate Relations Specialist, Dolly Shao, Melody learned about building connections and sought opportunities to engage with alumni and industry leaders. Shao’s referral for an internship at Umbra proved to be a turning point for Zhong, who excelled in her role, paving the way for a full-time position. “Thanks to Dolly Shao’s referral, I landed an interview for an internship role. After completing the internship successfully, I transitioned into a full-time position,” said Zhong.
Referral alone was not all that helped her secure her job. In preparation for her interview, Zhong took the time to familiarize herself with her resume and the stories she could speak to during the interview. Recognizing the significance of thorough research, she delved into understanding Umbra’s culture and the demands of her desired role. This prepared her not only for the interview but also instilled the confidence to articulate her fit convincingly.
In addition to traditional methods, Zhong embraced digital resources provided by the Centre for Career Design, such as Quinncia, which helped her hone her interview skills and gain insights into industry trends, enhancing her readiness for the competitive job market.
Melody’s success story serves as inspiration, demonstrating that with determination and strategic planning, one can navigate the complexities of the professional world and secure rewarding opportunities.
