Krembil Public Healthcare Internship Program
Shaping the Next Generation of Healthcare Leaders
About the Program
Launched in 2020–21, the Krembil Public Healthcare Internship Program is a flagship initiative of the Krembil Centre for Health Management and Leadership. The program offers students from the MBA – Health Industry Management Specialization (HIMS) and the Master of Health Industry Administration (MHIA) program an opportunity to gain 10–16 weeks of immersive, hands-on learning with leading healthcare organizations across Canada.
These students come with a strong foundation in healthcare courses and apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges. Under the mentorship of healthcare executives, interns sharpen their professional and leadership skills while contributing directly to the sector. For many, the program acts as a steppingstone to full-time employment.

About the Internship Program
-
- Five successful years of connecting top graduate students with signature host sites.
- Annual placements at outstanding healthcare organizations such as Apotex, Sinai Health Foundation, Circle of Care, and Chartwell Retirement Residences.
- Interns have worked on high-impact projects in areas such as donor engagement, memory care innovation, healthcare consulting, and community care operations.
- Positive outcomes for both students and hosts – with multiple interns securing full-time offers following their placements.
- Each intern received $15,000 as Krembil Award along with stipends from the host sites.
The recruitment process for the Krembil Public Healthcare Internship Program is highly competitive and rigorous, ensuring that only the most qualified candidates are selected. In collaboration with Schulich’s Centre for Career Design, students from the MBA–HIMS and MHIA programs are invited to apply through Schulich’s career portal.
The process begins with a screening round based on resumes and application materials, where candidates are assessed on academic performance, healthcare-related experience, and extracurricular involvement. Shortlisted applicants then proceed to two rounds of interviews—the first conducted by a selection committee chaired by Prof. Joseph Mapa, and the second by the respective host site organizations. This thorough approach guarantees that interns not only excel academically but also demonstrate the professionalism, adaptability, and leadership qualities essential to succeed in dynamic healthcare environments.
Building on its success, the program has now expanded to support 10 interns annually. This growth is made possible through strengthened partnerships across the healthcare sector, ensuring a broader reach and impact.
Interns benefit from:
- $17,500 Krembil award each plus host-site stipends (optional).
- Direct mentorship from healthcare leaders.
- Exposure to diverse healthcare sectors including pharmaceuticals, philanthropy, long-term care, and community services.
- Skill Development: Strategic thinking, problem-solving, communication, and project management.
- Career Advancement: Many interns transition into full-time leadership-track roles post-program.
- Sector Contribution: Host organizations benefit from fresh insights, research, and actionable strategies developed by interns.
With its expanded scope, the Krembil Public Healthcare Internship Program continues to invest in the next generation of healthcare leaders, preparing them to innovate, lead, and strengthen health systems in Canada and beyond.
