The Verities: Leadership Behaviours That Endure

January 31, 2022 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm EST

Working life has been dramatically affected by the pandemic, but some ideas and attitudes endure. For example, insights into leadership comportment – the way you might most effectively behave if you reach very senior levels, even CEO – are as relevant today as ever.

Some years ago, back when I was a junior at what is now a big global management consulting firm, we were fortunate to land an assignment helping a newly appointed CEO plan his initial impact on his organization.  It was a wonderful opportunity, both for him and for us, to think about how the behaviour of a leader sets the tone for the organization and ultimately his or her reputation. Let me share with you some of the ideas we examined together back then.

Sheelagh Whittaker loves to laugh. A savvy strategist and CEO, shrewd observer of the zeitgeist, and engaging storyteller – imparting wisdom from her invariably humorous stories – she rose to corporate top echelons back when people thought the glass ceiling was an observation deck.

A Schulich MBA grad (Class of ’75), Sheelagh was the first female CEO of a TSX listed company.  She has served as CEO, board member, and mother in Canada, the US, Britain and Australia.
