Students and instructors are expected to maintain a professional relationship characterized by courtesy and mutual respect and to refrain from actions disruptive to such a relationship. Moreover, it is the responsibility of the instructor to maintain an appropriate academic atmosphere in the classroom and the responsibility of the student to cooperate in that endeavour.

CONCERN
You feel that an action was taken by faculty that violates your rights as outlined in the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, accessible here: https://oscr.students.yorku.ca/csrr
ACTION
You have two options, depending on the level of confidentiality you wish to maintain.
Option 1: Send a respectful email outlining the concern to your Program Director.
Option 2: If you wish to remain anonymous, send a respectful email outlining your concern to the Director, Student & Enrolment Services, who will confidentially share the concern with the Program Director.
Regardless of the option chosen, the Program Director will connect with the instructor to discuss your concern, and come to a resolution and/or identify areas for improvement. It is also at the Program Director’s discretion to first involve the Academic Area or Dean, based on the nature of the concern, before approaching the instructor.
OUTCOME
The resolution will be shared with you either by the Program Director directly or, in cases where you wish to remain anonymous, via the Director, Student & Enrolment Services.
Continue only if the outcome is not satisfactory.
If you are dissatisfied with the resolution, there are further steps you may take, including but not limited to:
- Dropping the course
- Consulting with the Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion (CHREI)
- Consulting with the Office of Student Community Relations (OSCR)
In any of the above cases, you should first book an appointment to discuss next steps with the Director, Student & Enrolment Services. Further, you may wish to avail yourself for a student advising appointment, at any point throughout the process.
