Svetlana Mamaeva (BBA ’18) used her academic and professional experiences to create a charitable initiative, called FinPowered, which provides free financial education workshops across Canada. She graduated from the Schulich School of Business in 2018 with an honours degree in Finance and previously spent over two years working in personal banking, where she earned the Top 10% in Canada Award for her performance.

Since the launch of FinPowered, Svetlana has hosted over 50 workshops at schools, educational centres and shelters in Canada and in her home country, Moldova. Her goal is to empower Canadians, primarily women, by educating them on a variety of topics, such as overcoming financial abuse, managing debt, budgeting, saving, as well as sharing insider tips on personal banking.

Earlier this year, she was chosen to be the official Financial Education Ambassador for the Canadian Centre for Women’s Empowerment (CCFWE), a national organization dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence and economic abuse. In collaboration with CCFWE, FinPowered provides women the resources to develop and achieve economic empowerment.

As a Miss World’s official delegate from Canada, Svetlana’s charitable initiative, and Beauty With A Purpose project, is aimed to educate and support Canadian women during the pandemic, as well as raise awareness about the issue of economic abuse.
