Truths from Blake Hutcheson at Perspectives Lecture
On October 30th, over 350 students, alumni, faculty, staff and industry professionals attended the 13th annual Perspectives Lecture at the Ritz-Carlton. Organized by the Schulich Real Property Alumni Association (SRPAA) and the Brookfield Centre in Real Estate & Infrastructure, this year’s event titled “Truths My Mentors Told Me,” featured Blake Hutcheson, President & Chief Pension Officer of OMERS and Chair of Oxford Properties Group, as the keynote speaker.
Emily Long (MBA ’15), Manager of Acquisitions and Asset Management at Crestpoint Real Estate Investments Ltd and Nathan Tracey (MBA ’17), Project Manager at Delta Urban Inc. kicked off the evening with special welcome remarks. Jim Clayton, Professor and Timothy R. Price Chair and Director of the Brookfield in Real Estate & Infrastructure, spoke on why this annual event is a valuable networking, alumni engagement and learning opportunity. Michael J. Cooper (MBA ’86), President and Chief Responsible Officer at Dream Unlimited, and close friend to Mr. Hutcheson, provided a warm and heartfelt introduction.
Mr. Hutcheson took the stage afterwards to deliver his keynote address. He shared many lessons that he has learned throughout his career from his family, friends and colleagues. “In the same way that businesses need plans, you need a life plan for 5, 10, 20 years from now” said Hutcheson. “Plans and dreams matter.” He greatly emphasized the importance of treating everyone fairly, trusting your gut and making your family a priority.
“Pursue greatness, and not money. Focus on having a balance in life, and never measure anybody by their net worth.”
“Blake’s reflections on his personal and professional experiences provided wonderful insight to those in the audience, particularly those of us in the early stages of our careers,” shared Emily Long, Perspectives Lecture Committee Co-Chair 2018.
This year’s event raised over $20,000 to the Schulich Student Experience Fund, which provides financial assistance for real estate and infrastructure students to attend and participate in case competitions, site visits, industry conferences, skills development and mentorship opportunities.
“The annual Perspectives Lecture provided an opportunity for participants to experience Blake Hutcheson in a uniquely candid format. We are truly grateful for the sponsors who contribute to our one-of-a-kind event and by doing so reinforce the community. Thank you for your confidence – we look forward to your continued support in the years to come,” says Nate Long, Perspectives Lecture Committee Co-Chair 2018.
