The Way Forward Podcast: A New Era of Leadership Insights from Professor Stephen Friedman

The Schulich School of Business is excited to present “The Way Forward Podcast,” hosted by Professor Stephen Friedman. This new video podcast aims to transcend the usual leadership clichés by offering actionable ideas on leadership, career, and management.
Unlike many leadership podcasts that focus on the “what,” “The Way Forward” delves into the “how” by featuring conversations with business leaders, innovative thinkers, and effective organizational practitioners who challenge conventional wisdom and embrace unique approaches.
“The podcast is refreshingly candid, concrete, and full of leadership, career, and management ideas that go beyond tired buzzwords,” says Professor Friedman. ”Each episode dives deep into real-world experiences and practical advice, offering listeners a unique perspective on navigating the complexities of professional life.”
Episode One: Why Winning an Argument is a Terrible Idea and Other Persuasion Gems for Leaders
In the inaugural episode, Professor Friedman sits down with Ben Wise, a 15-year industry veteran who currently leads programmatic media at Google and co-founded Captivate. Wise shares insights on why winning an argument is often counterproductive.
The conversation explores the nuances of emotional versus logical decision-making and offers practical tips for effective persuasion.
“When you’re planning to persuade someone, you come at it very logically, but the other side of the table is not receiving things logically, they’re receiving things emotionally,” Wise says. “I could give you all the right proof points, all the data, all the stats, but they probably made a snap decision based on some sort of emotional reaction.”
Wise and Friedman also provide valuable advice for young professionals and emphasize the importance of staying open to new ideas, being curious and the importance of continuous learning.
Tune in to “The Way Forward Podcast” for thought-provoking discussions that will inspire you to think differently and lead more effectively.
