Schulich’s Culture Crawl Celebrates Diversity

Schulich prides itself on being a melting pot for diverse nations all around the world; Schulich’s place of eminence and location in a cultural hub such as Toronto attracts students from more than 91 countries. Varied life experiences and careers are defining features of all the students who walk through these doors.
On October 13th, Karishma Varma, Director of International Affairs at the Graduate Business Council, opened Schulich’s doors to friends, family, and students to a packed auditorium for the annual Culture Crawl – a day of celebrating Schulich’s diversity.
The evening was divided into two elements, the Talent Show and the Pavilion Crawl. Students showcased their talents in cultural performances at the Robert McEwen Auditorium and wowed the crowd with energetic Indian dances, Bachata and Salsa, exotic songs of heartbreak from China, poetry recitals, stand-up comedy and a first for this year, jiu-jitsu.
Additionally, students from different nationalities bedecked their residences in the festivities of their cultures, food, and drinks to showcase the range of flavourful idiosyncrasies that we hold close to our hearts. Guided groups were seen walking around the campus on a chilly October evening to the warmth of the different cultural Pavilions. Students from Africa, Atlantic Canada, China, Germany, India, Latin America, and Ukraine had transformed their apartments on-campus as pavilions of their respective cultures and brought an irresistible vibe and cheerful warmth to over a hundred guests.
Carlos Rios, a first year Master of Marketing Student, conducted a jiu-jitsu instructional performance and said, “It was great to experience so many cultures in a short space of time with my friends.”
Imran Kanga, Assistant Director of Admissions, attended the event and said, “It definitely took me down memory lane to when I attended as a student! I’m glad that the event is still a huge success.”
Over the space of the night, in a whirlwind of color and noise, what stays behind is the warm feeling of a wonderful evening celebrating our values and diversity.
