Joe Mapa Named Executive Director of Schulich’s Health Industry Management Program
I am pleased to announce that Joseph Mapa, President and CEO of Sinai Health System, has been appointed Executive Director of the Health Industry Management Program at Schulich.
As Executive Director, Joseph’s responsibilities will include the strategic development and future planning of the Health Industry Management Program, and he will work closely with Professor Amin Mawani, the Program Director. Over the years, Joseph has served the Program in a number of capacities, including teaching, mentoring and as an executive advisor. He was appointed Executive-in-Residence and Adjunct Professor in 2013.
In January of this year Joseph was appointed President & CEO of the newly formed Sinai Health System, following the amalgamation of Mount Sinai Hospital, Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute and Circle of Care, a home care organization. He assumed this position after serving as President & CEO of Mount Sinai Hospital since 2001.
He is a graduate of the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto and is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Health Leaders, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is also Past Chair of the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario and completed terms on the Governing Council of the University of Toronto, the Board of the Canadian Nurses Association, and the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation Advisory Council.
Joseph is the author of numerous articles in the field of health care and the co-author of three books focusing on healthcare management. He also co-edited a book on effective government relations in the healthcare industry with Professor Peggy Leatt of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
He is the recipient of both the Chairman’s Award for Distinguished Service and a Mentorship Award from the Canadian College of Health Leaders, as well as a recipient of a Teaching Excellence Award at Schulich School of Business. In 2012 he was recognized with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his significant contributions to Canada.
