Interview Questions
Tell us about yourself. My name is Sherri Tran, and I am currently a part-time accelerated MBA student at Schulich! During the day, I am a Procurement Specialist at CSA Group; I found myself in this industry while trying to find myself in my undergraduate experience at Schulich, and I am back to further strengthen my knowledge while tying it to my work experience. In my spare time, I often find myself trying new things. As a result, I can play three instruments (relatively) well, dabble in all sorts of arts and crafts such as painting and embroidery, and I am now venturing into more active activities, like bouldering! I am always happy to learn something new, whether it is at work, school, or personally.
Why did you decide to pursue an MBA program at this point of your career?I decided to pursue an MBA because I am a strong believer of continuous learning. Whether it is hands-on through experience or at an educational institution (such as an MBA), there is always an opportunity to grow. Personally, I love absorbing information and thought that pursuing an MBA while working can help me better understand concepts and apply those concepts at work simultaneously.
Why Schulich? As a BBA graduate from Schulich, I was already exposed to the opportunities such as connecting with peers or industry professionals. It is a school that brings together so much talent from diverse backgrounds, leading to new understandings. In addition, there were a lot of benefits of returning to Schulich, such as accelerating through the program, or having the opportunity to complete the program part-time while I continue to work.
What word or phrase describes your Schulich experience so far?Connecting! Whether it is connecting with others, or connecting the content we learn to work, there are so many opportunities to link experiences together.
What is the most memorable moment at Schulich? My most memorable memory at Schulich is being a part of the organizing committee for the 2023 MBA Games hosted at Schulich. After months of planning, bringing together Master-level students all across Canada for the weekend-long event was the greatest pay-off. Meeting new people, working together with them, and most importantly, having fun was the best!
How does a Schulich MBA prepare you for success? The Schulich MBA prepares you for success as you are able to learn from different perspectives. Many individuals at Schulich get an MBA to pair with their non-business experience and degrees; being able to learn and hear insights from those in IT, healthcare, engineering, etc. is always interesting and engaging. The same concept can be applied incredibly differently in varying industries, and the added perspectives add to your own understanding and application as well.
What would you like prospective students to know about Schulich’s MBA program?Schulich pushes you to improve yourself without even knowing. From learning in class, learning from peers, connecting with professionals, and applying it on the job or even in extracurricular activities, it is an environment that fosters growth.
What advice do you have for someone who considers pursuing an MBA/Master program at Schulich?Do your research! Schulich’s MBA and Master programs are great, it is always important to really understand the options available, such as the different MBA specializations or even types of Master programs offered at Schulich. I would recommend connecting with alumni or current students to see how the program can align for you and your future. And of course, once you have done your research, go for it!
