Derek Wei
Prior to joining the MREI program, Derek was an Analyst in the City of Toronto’s Real Estate Services Division. In this position, he was tasked with the financial analysis, due diligence and negotiation of commercial leases and licenses with private landlords, tenants and developers. Prior to that, Derek worked for a boutique real estate developer in downtown Toronto as a member of its commercial and residential development and construction management team.
Derek chose the Schulich MREI program in order to advance his knowledge and deepen his understanding in the areas of real estate and infrastructure finance, investment and development. He feels that the program offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from both professors and industry professionals, and also connect with leaders in both the real estate and infrastructure sectors.
Upon entering the program, Derek’s main interests were commercial real estate development and investment management. However, after gaining exposure to the infrastructure sector during first semester courses, he is increasingly intrigued by this field and the inter-connections with real estate. He was part of the winning team at Schulich’s Developers’ Den Case International Competition held in March
Outside of the classroom, Derek is active in his community, volunteering at a local soup kitchen that serves weekly dinners to about 80 to 100 low-income individuals. Derek holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto in Canada.
