Before You Travel

Preparing for an international experience is an important part of making the most of your time abroad.

All students participating in a Schulich-sanctioned international activity must attend a mandatory online Pre-Departure Session. The Pre-Departure Session provides essential information, practical guidance, and resources to help you prepare for a safe, successful, and meaningful experience abroad.

These requirements apply to students participating in:

  • Student exchange

  • Dual-degree study term

  • International study tour

  • International work placement or internship

  • Consulting project abroad

Student Responsibilities

Each student is responsible for understanding the requirements of their international experience and preparing accordingly.

Before you travel, ensure that you:

  • Obtain all required travel documents
  • Arrange appropriate travel and health insurance
    •  You are required to have comprehensive health insurance for the duration of your time abroad.  It is your responsibility to ensure that you have appropriate coverage. You may wish to consider the York University Guard.me International Insurance, which covers medical, emergency, evacuation, and 3rd party liability at a reduced rate for York University students.  Proof of adequate insurance will be required prior to departure.   
  • Plan for your health and well-being
  • Understand safety, risk, and personal responsibility
  • Confirm accommodation arrangements
  • Prepare financially
  • Familiarize yourself with the cultural norms and practices of your host country
  • Review and understand your academic requirements
  • Submit the Schulich Travel Registry and Informed Consent form
