Lois Tullo, Schulich Instructor of Financial Services, was the featured speaker of the 38th UN/CEFACT Forum: Five Futures of Currency on May 19, 2022.

The lunch and learn shared the insight of over 100 superforecasters that identified Technological, Economic, Geopolitical, Societal, and Environmental risks and trends that will shape the future of currency and payments.

“Uncertainty, risk and opportunity are at the forefront of decision making,” says Tullo. “We are living in ‘interesting times’ that demand that we examine the future and prepare today.”

cryptocurrencyTullo’s talk focused on how digital currency will shape and define how and with whom the future of trade is conducted. The five plausible futures of currency include: Regulatory Centralization: CBDC; Decentralized Metaverse: Stablecoins/Crypto; A Divided World; Infrastructure Failure; and BIOmoney. The talk will discuss their implications for trade, organization, early warning signals, and back-casting praeparation.

The 38th United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) Forum brought together experts from the public and private sectors globally to discuss trade facilitation recommendations and e-business standards. The 38th Forum took place virtually from May 16-20, 2022. The forum was filled with interesting roundtables, panel discussions, and webinars.
