Vijay Setlur

Vijay Setlur is a Marketing Instructor with Schulich School of Business-York University, specializing in the sport and tourism industries. As well, Vijay is a Marketing Instructor and a Competitions Consultant with Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), the governing body of soccer for North America, Central America and Caribbean, in which he conducts marketing workshops for clubs and coordinates match logistics for club and national team competitions throughout the region.

In higher education, Vijay teaches sport marketing and tourism marketing, applying an “industry-centric” approach to marketing education that is grounded in experiential learning. This has led to project partnerships with leagues, teams, brands, media companies, venues and marketing agencies that have enabled Vijay’s undergraduate students to complete 155 consulting projects for 141 organisations across three continents. Vijay’s industry-centric approach to education helped him be named twice to the Schulich Teaching Excellence Awards Top 10 Undergrad Instructors.

Vijay is also Faculty Advisor for Schulich’s undergraduate sport business club – York Sports Business Association – and has collaborated with the student club to develop and stage close to 35 industry events, including Canada’s only annual Sports, Media & Entertainment Career Fair, which he founded in 2015. Vijay also provides analysis on sport business and the sport industry to the media, with his commentary having appeared in over 280 stories for various outlets including The Canadian Press, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Bloomberg, BNN Bloomberg, CTV News Channel, CTV Toronto, CBC, CBC News Network, Global TV, CITY-TV, CP24, CHCH TV, OneSoccer, CBC Radio, 680 News. Collectively, Vijay’s efforts have helped raise the profile of sport business at Schulich and built Schulich’s brand in the Canadian sport industry.

In the sport industry, Vijay has experience in marketing, partnership marketing, communications and event management. He has held positions with various organisations including Hamilton Sports Group, Play On! Canada, Ontario Soccer, Woodbine Entertainment, Global T20 Canada (professional Twenty20 cricket league), Visual Sports Systems, Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, SDI Marketing and FIFA U20 World Cup Canada 2007. Vijay has also worked as a soccer journalist and analyst, and covered various international competitions, including FIFA World Cup, Concacaf Gold Cup and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, among others that have taken him to stadiums throughout Canada, USA, South Africa and the Caribbean.

The Toronto native enjoys reading, networking, mentoring students, travelling, participating in industry conferences, attending film festivals, exploring Toronto and supporting Canada’s men’s national soccer team – domestically and internationally. Vijay has a Master of Business Administration degree from Schulich School of Business-York University, specializing in marketing, as well as certificates in Public Relations and Event Management from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. USA, respectively.  He also holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Urban and Regional Planning from TMU.
