Vijay Setlur

Vijay Setlur is a Marketing Instructor with Schulich School of Business-York University focusing on the sport and tourism industries. As well, Vijay is a Consultant (Marketing Instructor) with the Professional Football Development department of Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), the governing body for soccer for North America, Central America and Caribbean.

 

In higher education, Vijay specializes in teaching sport marketing and tourism marketing, applying an “industry-centric” approach to marketing education. This has led to partnerships with governing bodies, leagues, teams, brands, media companies, venues and marketing agencies that have enabled his undergrad students to complete 168 consulting projects for 152 organizations across three continents.

 

Vijay is also Faculty Advisor for Schulich’s undergraduate sport business club – Schulich Sports Business Association – and has collaborated with the club to develop and stage 46 career development events, including Canada’s only annual Sports, Media & Entertainment Career Fair and Job Shadowing Opportunity.

 

Vijay also provides analysis on sport business developments to the media, with his commentary appearing in 316 stories for various outlets including The Canadian Press, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Bloomberg, BNN Bloomberg, CTV News Channel, CTV Toronto, CBC, CBC News Network, Global TV, CITY-TV, CP24, CHCH TV, OneSoccer, CBC Radio, and 680 News. Collectively, Vijay’s efforts have helped raise the profile of sport business at Schulich and built Schulich’s brand in the Canadian sport industry.

 

In the sport industry, Vijay has a variety of experience with roles in marketing, event management, partnership marketing, communication, and business development. Vijay’s industry experience includes positions with TGI Sport, Concacaf, 110th Grey Cup-2023 Grey Cup Festival (CFL), Play On! Canada, Ontario Soccer, Woodbine Entertainment, Global T20 Canada, Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, SDI Marketing and FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007, among others.

 

Vijay is also a freelance soccer analyst and former soccer journalist and has covered various international competitions, including FIFA World Cup, Concacaf Gold Cup and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, among others that have taken him to stadiums throughout Canada, USA, South Africa and the Caribbean.

 

Vijay is a Director on the Board of Canada SCORES, a non-profit organization providing vulnerable children with free after-school programming combining soccer, poetry, and community projects, as well as a Director on the Board of Ontario Schools Cricket Association Foundation, which oversees strategically directing funding to OSCA programs in high schools.

 

The Toronto native and resident enjoys reading, networking, mentoring students, travelling, participating in industry conferences, attending film festivals, exploring Toronto and supporting Canada’s men’s national soccer team – domestically and internationally. Vijay has a Master of Business Administration degree from Schulich School of Business-York University, specializing in marketing, as well as certificates in Public Relations and Event Management from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in Toronto and The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. USA, respectively. He also holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Urban and Regional Planning from TMU.
