Professor of Accounting

Dr. Marcia Annisette is Associate Dean, Academic at the Schulich School of Business, York University Canada.  She is also a Full Professor of Accounting. She holds a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Manchester and is a Fellow Certified Chartered Accountant of the UK. She also is a CPA, CGA of Canada. Her major research interest is in the social organization of the accountancy profession.  Dr. Annisette has received several awards for her scholarly work, including: the 1999 the Basel Yamey Prize for the best article for the year published in Accounting Business and Financial History Journal; the 2008 Outstanding Paper Award (winner) at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence for her co-authored paper published in Qualitative Research in Accounting and Management and the 2011 & 2016 “Highly Commended” Award (runner up)in the Mary Parker Follett Manuscript Award for articles published in Accounting Auditing and Accountability Journal. She is currently co-editor-in-Chief of Accounting Organizations and Society, was co-editor-in-Chief of Critical Perspectives in Accounting from 2009-2018 and currently sits on the editorial boards of 11 other academic accounting journals. She has previously held academic appointments at universities in England, the USA, Spain, and her home country, Trinidad and Tobago.  She actively participates in the organization of several important conferences in the fields of inter-disciplinary accounting research and accounting history where she has served variously as conference convener and chair, opening plenary speaker and senior faculty advisor.

Reetu Gupta is the President and CEO of the Gupta Family Foundation – whose recent philanthropic work saw 300 oxygen concentrators sent to India where Covid relief efforts are paramount – The Gupta Group and Easton’s Group of Hotels, Canada’s largest private hotel development firm with over 20 properties in Canada and 6 under development. Reetu is also the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Rogue Insight Capital.

Reetu was awarded Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 Award in 2017 and was recipient of the Women’s Executive Network 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada in both 2019 and 2020.

Reetu continues to be an inspiration in hospitality and for women everywhere.

Ela Veresiu is an Associate Professor of Marketing and the Marketing Area PhD Program Coordinator at the Schulich School of Business, York University. Her research, which focuses on understanding and promoting consumer diversity and market inclusion at the interplay of identity, technology, branding, and institutions, has been awarded the prestigious Sidney J. Levy Award and the Ferber Award Honorable Mention, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), published in the Journal of Consumer Research, Consumption Markets & Culture, the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research, and Marketing Theory, and featured by, among others, Fast Company, The Conversation, and HuffPost.

Mortgage Agent & Co-founder, The Lending Suite

Miranda is a Mortgage Agent and co-founder of a Mortgage Financing Team – The Lending Suite.   Miranda did her undergraduate degree in Philosophy at McGill University.  After which, she worked for a major bank as a Residential Mortgage Advisor. Through her client interactions, Miranda saw, first-hand, how difficult it is in Canada to be able to afford a home as a young person. This drove Miranda to further pursue an education in Real Estate.  The MREI program exposed her to the various economic drivers behind the Real Estate Market, creative solutions to affordable housing, the exciting world of real estate development, and the importance of strong relationships.

From the MREI program Miranda went on to work for a REIT within a Project Specific Team responsible for coordinating the delivery of a Master Planned Development.  This role gave her experience in project management, construction, and master planned development.   From this, Miranda decided that she wanted to embrace her professional relationships to pursue entrepreneurship.  In 2019 she created The Lending Suite where she and her team specializes in residential and commercial real estate financing.  Miranda’s network and relationships within the industry allow her to deliver the best results for her client portfolio which includes seasoned investors, first time buyers, and real estate entrepreneurs.

Outside of her career, Miranda is an avid traveller and loves to spend time at her family restaurant – The Sultan’s Tent.

Miranda is excited to share what she has learned about her industry, her time at Schulich, as well as how she navigated male dominated fields and pivoted through her career and education over the years to a position that she loves!

Megi Kokalari is a Schulich BBA alumna returning to pursue her accelerated MBA degree this fall. Upon graduating from Schulich in 2017, she re-located to Vancouver to take part in the esteemed Sales Management Trainee Program (SMT) at Labatt Breweries. After spending two years working as a Sales Representative out west, Megi left Labatt in order to explore her strengths and passions. Megi’s interest in people and wellness led her to LifeWorks, an employee counselling and wellbeing program, where she spent the past two years working as a Customer Success Manager. Most recently, she has taken on a Customer Success role at Ceridian, a SaaS Human Capital Management firm. Megi’s curious nature, adaptability, and appetite for experiences has allowed her to pivot into multiple industries, while pursuing opportunities which align closely with her passions.

She specializes in aligning people and behaviors to support business transformations and focuses on strategic change management and implementation, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and leadership alignment. In addition, Patrice is also the National Leader of Deloitte Canada’s DE&I Practice. She has supported a broad range of clients and approaches her work from a client-centered perspective with a strong focus on results.

Saumya holds 12 years of experience in Client Experience Strategy, Product Management, B2B Marketing, and Business Analysis across Financial Services, Marketing Services and IT firms. She is a Class of 2012 MBA in Marketing and Strategy from Schulich School of Business and an Engineer from one of India’s leading college. Saumya has been at CIBC for last 7 years working as Consultant, Client Experience Strategy for enterprise initiatives, as a Senior Product Manager for their digital platform to business and corporate clients, and currently, as Group Product Manager for CIBC Debit Cards. Prior to CIBC, she led sales and marketing in a Marketing Consulting firm in Mumbai, and also worked as Research Associate at Canadian Marketing Association. Saumya is an advocate for Diversity and Inclusion and channels it by mentoring in Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) programme and leading CIBC’s South Asian Ethnicity Network events. Saumya fondly cherishes her time at Schulich and is glad to be here today.
