Schulich MMKG Students Gain Global Consulting Experience in Ghana
Master of Marketing students collaborated with local businesses, worked alongside GIMPA students and met with Ghana’s Vice President during an international consulting project.
A group of eight students from the Schulich School of Business’s Master of Marketing (MMKG) program recently travelled to Accra, Ghana, for an immersive consulting experience that combined international business exposure with hands-on client work.
A highlight of the visit took place on April 29 when the students were invited to Jubilee House, the presidential palace in Accra, for a courtesy meeting with Ghana’s Vice President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a distinguished York University alumna.
The meeting brought together students and senior government officials to discuss international academic partnerships, educational cooperation and opportunities to foster innovation and youth development. The experience provided students with a rare opportunity to engage directly with national leaders and gain insight into the role that higher education can play in supporting global collaboration.
The visit formed part of the Global Consulting Project (GCP), a faculty-led experiential learning initiative that took place from April 26 to May 1. Led by Professor Theo Peridis, the program enables MMKG students to apply classroom learning to real-world business challenges while earning credit toward their Marketing Field Project course.
Hosted by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), the program exposed students to the region’s business environment and provided opportunities to collaborate with GIMPA students on a range of marketing and consulting activities. GIMPA is a leading public institution dedicated to developing leaders in management, public administration, business and governance across Ghana and the African continent.
Through the partnership, students were paired with two local organizations, one operating in the real estate sector and the other in health products. Working directly with their client organizations, students developed strategic marketing recommendations aimed at strengthening brand visibility and expanding market reach.
The consulting engagement will continue throughout the summer term, culminating in the presentation of strategic recommendations to help each organization enhance its marketing effectiveness and long-term growth.
Beyond the consulting work, the experience offered students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of international markets, explore Ghana’s dynamic business landscape and develop the cross-cultural skills increasingly needed in today’s global economy.
The Global Consulting Project reflects Schulich’s commitment to experiential learning and global engagement by providing students with opportunities to work with international partners, tackle real business challenges and apply their expertise in diverse cultural and economic contexts.
