Schulich Alumnus Wins Report on Business Best Executive Award
Larry Tomei, (BBA ’93, MBA ’94) Executive Vice-President & Head of Wealth and Personal Banking Canada, HSBC Bank Canada, is a winner of the inaugural Report on Business Best Executive Awards – a new annual program celebrating excellence among non-CEO leaders at the SVP, EVP and C-suite levels.
Tomei says the award is a team recognition and not an individual one, crediting all the people he has worked with over his 30-year career.
The son of Italian immigrants, Tomei’s parents inspired the belief that focusing on education, family and community would lead to a happy and productive life. Studying at Schulich for both his undergrad and MBA, he says Schulich provided a quality education teaching foundation and instilled in him the importance of team collaboration.
“Schulich has amazing profs, culture and curriculum. I learned a lot of things you can’t learn from a book,” Tomei said. “I am so proud to be a part of the Schulich community, I have amazing memories.”
Tomei is ecstatic that his son Jack has decided to follow in his footsteps as he will start the Schulich BBA program this fall. Tomei’s advice to Jack and others about to begin their careers is to think long-term and build a good group of connections. “Realize your career is like a stock market, there will be ups and downs, but over the long term, it will be up,” he says.
The 50 winners of the Report on Business Best Executive Awards represent the best of Canadian leadership in five functional areas: Finance; Human Resources; Operations; Sales and Marketing; and Technology. Tomei will receive his award in the Operations sector this October.
