Jinlun Zhang Finds Success with Strategic Career Design
Jinlun Zhang’s (MMAI ‘24) proactive approach to using the Centre for Career Design’s (CCD) resources paved the way for his recent success in securing a full-time role as a Digital Advisory Consultant at BDO Canada, starting September 2024. Realizing his resume needed a professional update, Zhang booked a resume review session on Handshake with industry advisor Glan Chen. Chen’s direct and insightful coaching deeply resonated with Zhang, helping him refine his resume to be concise and impactful.
When invited for an interview at BDO Canada, Zhang immediately engaged once again with Chen. Together, they crafted answers to possible interview questions, and rehearsed extensively, ensuring Zhang was well-prepared. This preparation was evident as the interview questions closely mirrored those they had practiced.
Tailored advice from the CCD was crucial in helping Zhang bridge cultural differences, adjusting his communication to align with Canadian professional expectations—vital for a role emphasizing communication skills. Zhang also participated in multiple mock interviews, enhancing his confidence and interview prowess.
Zhang’s strategic use of CCD resources exemplifies how targeted career support can help international students overcome challenges like language barriers and cultural differences. His journey underscores the importance of seeking guidance and preparing thoroughly to achieve career aspirations. As Zhang steps into his new role, his story serves as an inspiring example for students aiming to transform career opportunities into success.
