From the Classroom to the Field: How Mathew Ceolin Landed a Marketing Internship with NVA Canada
Mathew Ceolin (MMKG ‘25), recently celebrated a major milestone in his career journey—securing a Marketing Intern position at NVA Canada. With a background shaped by classroom learning, Ceolin credits his success to hard work, consistent networking, and the resources offered by the Centre for Career Design (CCD).
Understanding the importance of a professional online presence, Ceolin began by visiting the CCD Portrait Studio, ensuring his profile made a strong first impression on potential employers.
He then took advantage of networking events hosted by the CCD, even though he was initially unsure of how to navigate them. “I attended the CPG Recruitment Fair in September without prior experience on best practices for events like these,” he shares. “But I learned through my Professional Development Hive class and became more confident.”
Later, he attended the Schulich Sport Business Association fair, where he not only expanded his network but also gained clarity on the sport industry and practical advice for breaking into the field.
When interview invitations started coming in, Ceolin knew preparation would be key. He used the CCD’s Big Interview platform to practice responses and analyze his performance, which was particularly useful as his interviews were held virtually over Microsoft Teams.
He also sought advice from Schulich professors with industry expertise to tailor his interview strategy and stand out from other candidates.
In addition to digital tools, Ceolin leaned on insights from guest speakers and class notes from the Professional Development Hive course, incorporating those perspectives into his interview answers.
Ceolin encourages other Schulich students to explore everything the CCD has to offer and take initiative in their job search, “Once I learned about what the CCD was and what it could offer students, I realized I needed to take advantage and use it for my benefit in securing a position to better my career. Especially in a Master of Marketing program that is a one-year specialization, make sure you attend as many events as possible and be active in the Schulich community.”
