I’m Pelumioluwa Abiola, currently pursuing a master’s in the management of AI at Schulich. Outside of my academic life, I enjoy binge watching all good series; especially old movies, spending quality time with family and friends, having a good laugh, and trying out new things, cause well why not? J. During my undergraduate studies in accounting at Covenant University Nigeria, I realized that while accounting came naturally to me due to its familiarity, it didn’t excite me.
Fast-forwarding to my final year of undergraduate studies, I attended a technology event featuring a panel of inspiring women in tech. This reshaped my perspective and career aspirations. Motivated and eager for change, I decided to transition into the tech industry. I did not know how I was going to do it; all I knew was where I wanted to be.
Following this new excitement, I started to research and delve into technology to identify my specific area of interest. It was through this; I discovered my passion for Artificial Intelligence. From this newfound direction, I identified the new skills I needed. I started to learn Python programming and while working as a product manager for a financial institution. Over the course of three years in my role as a product manager, I loved solving business problems, innovating, and contributing to the creation of new digital products.
Although I enjoyed my job a lot, I wanted more. I wanted to deepen my understanding especially in AI and this drove me to finding the MMAI program. I am now pursuing master’s studies at Schulich. My journey so far reflects a God-led, deliberate and ever-evolving approach to aligning my skills and passion and I am eager to continue my journey through living, loving, laughing and learning.
- Why did you decide to pursue a Master program at this point of your career?
I chose to pursue a master’s in AI because, much like the internet in the early 2000s and the computers in the 1970s, AI is shaping the landscape of today and defining the future. My fascination with AI resulted in my strong desire to deepen my understanding and actively engage with it. Specifically, I was most curious about how AI models were built and applied to solve business challenges.
- Why Schulich?
I chose Schulich because it was one of the few business schools with the forward-thinking perspective that understood the crucial aspect of not just building AI model but bridging the gap between business problems and AI solutions. Also, it did not hurt that Schulich has a reputation of being one of the top business schools in Canada.
But in more direct terms, I chose Schulich for its MMAI program, because it is a perfect blend of business acumen and AI expertise. What stood out for me was the program’s commitment to maintaining a balance—neither diluting the technical aspects for business nor vice versa. Prior to starting my program, I expected a highly technical and business-focused program, and I must say I was not remotely close to being disappointed.
- What word or phrase describes your Schulich experience so far?
Simply challenging but worth it.
- What is the most memorable moment at Schulich?
Wow! This is a tough question. I have so many memorable times at Schulich but if I must pick, I would say the Culture Brawl. It was such a beautiful night. I sat there in auditorium just in awe of how amazing different cultures are and how little I knew, that I was so grateful for the opportunity to experience such a colorful event. It was a fun night and a good way to say goodbye to the cool fall breeze, and hello winter cold.
- What is your plan after graduation and how has Schulich helped with that?
Upon completing my master’s program, my plan is to contribute to an organization by crafting and implementing enterprise AI solutions that effectively address business challenges. I am eager to apply the knowledge I have gained and learn more as I proceed into my professional career and development.
