Alexander Wirch’s Journey from Networking Event to Visa Internship
Alexander Wirch (iBBA ‘26 Candidate) has recently started his role as Merchant and Acquiring Intern at Visa, an accomplishment borne from determination, strategic engagement, and thorough research.
The journey began with a discovery on Handshake – the Centre for Career Design’s (CCD) flagship platform – which Wirch has come to trust for its wide array of networking opportunities and job postings. It was here that he discovered a networking event hosted by Visa, a name synonymous with innovation in the financial industry.
Attending the networking event, Wirch found himself face-to-face with the VP of Merchants and Acquisitions, who is the manager to his current manager. This encounter proved to be pivotal as it not only enlightened Wirch about the internship process at Visa but also led to a referral that would help pave the path to his ultimate success.
When Wirch received an invitation to interview for the position, he left no stone unturned. Drawing upon his network within Visa, he engaged in meaningful conversations, gaining valuable insights into the company culture and expectations. Additionally, he meticulously reviewed the slide deck presented at the networking event, ensuring he was well-versed in Visa’s mission and values. Furthermore, he delved into extensive research on the work of his prospective department, equipping himself with the knowledge needed to excel in the interview.
Wirch’s dedication and preparation paid off when he aced the interview and secured the internship. “Life is about looking and knocking on doors until finding the right one. At Schulich we are so lucky that the CCD brings those doors to us, and all we need to do is knock,” Wirch commented. His journey stands as a testament to the power of seizing opportunities and leveraging resources effectively.
