Pre-Arrival Action Items - Summer 2012


Congratulations and welcome to students beginning graduate studies at the Schulich School of Business! By entering any of our business programs, you are embarking on an educational experience that will be challenging and rewarding. In addition to the resources offered in the larger community at York University, there are specially designed support services just for Schulich students.
Smart Start, including Academic & Career Planning Session & Optional Building Tour
All new Summer 2012 students must book and attend Smart Start on Saturday, April 21, 2012. This day includes an Academic & Career Planning Session presented to you by Student Services staff. Booking instructions are emailed directly to you after confirmation of acceptance.
Stay afterward for an MBA-guided tour of the Schulich School after your Academic & Career Planning Session.

Launch Week Schedules for Fall 2012
All new Summer students are also required to attend Schulich's first week of sessions, called Launch Week. Fall 2012 Launch Week schedules will be available under on Launch Week tab in May. You will be placed in a cohort, or section of classes for MGMT 5150 and the remainder of your second term classes. Stay tuned for more information.
Advanced Standing & Waiver with Replacement for First Year Core Courses - Apply NOW
Depending on your undergraduate degree and work experience, you could be eligible for advanced standing or waiver with replacement for one or more first year 5100- and 5200-level core courses. The deadline to apply for Advanced Standing or waiver with replacement is April 23, 2012 for new Winter students. Applying for advanced standing or waivers is normally done at the time of application to the program through the Admissions Application form. If you have not yet applied for advanced standing or waiver with replacement, or to check your eligibility, please contact Michelle Hughes, Schulich Graduate Admissions Assistant, at mhughes@schulich.yorku.ca.
Enrolment & Registration
Once you have booked the Smart Start/Academic & Career Planning session, enrolment & registration information will be emailed to you directly. You will then be permitted to enrol in courses before attending your session. Spaces in first year courses are reserved. Please review the 2011-2012 Graduate Student Handbook, which provides program overviews, core and elective course descriptions, as well as academic rules and regulations. Handbooks are revised every June and made available to students online and in hard copy at this Academic Planning session.
The online Enrolment & Registration pages also provide important details about the process. Your personal first term schedule and specific cohort will be emailed to you before the Academic & Career Planning session. For the Fall and Winter semesters, cohorts F, G, X and Y are used for new Full time and Part time cohorts. Section Z is for Accelerated & Post-MBA students and is used solely for Launch Week group purposes.
Fees for Summer 2012
Academic fee information and links to your personal enrolment history and student account status are posted on the York's Current Students Web site under "Money Matters": http://www.yorku.ca/yorkweb/cs.htm. Summer fees will be updated online by the Registrar's Office as soon as they have been approved by our Board of Governors.
Academic Accommodations
Students with a variety of documented disabilities may be eligible for academic accommodations, such as additional time to write an examination or the use of assistive technology. Please visit the Counselling and Disabilities Web site for more information. If you require accommodations in class or during examinations and evaluations, we also strongly encourage you to make an appointment with the Director, Student Services, Praveen Muruganandan before classes begin.

Student Services & International Relations, through five professional units, supports students in their pursuit of academic, professional and personal goals from the first contact with the school through to graduation. Welcome to Schulich!
Launch Week
All new MBA, MPA and Post-MBA students are required to attend Schulich's first week of sessions, called Launch Week. During Launch Week, first year students begin MGMT 5150 and all students, including Accelerated and Post MBA, receive a complete orientation where you will learn the necessary tools to be successful in your program. You will also have an opportunity to meet peers, immediately participate in group business case preparation, team building exercises, and get acquainted with the faculty and staff at Schulich.
Students who began studies in Summer 2012 also must attend most sessions in Launch Week.
Fall 2012 Launch Week begins September 4 or 5 and will end September 9
All students are expected to bring their laptops to Launch Week activities.
Materials for sessions during Launch Week can be accessed on the Launch Week CMD from the start of classes for several weeks. You will need your Lotus Notes account to access this information.

Arrival Guide
The "New-to-Canada Arrival Guide" provides you with the necessary information for your pre-departure, arrival, and day-to-day living in Canada.
Orientation Session
Orientation sessions are provided before the beginning of each semester for international and exchange students. These orientations provide important information including study and work permits, Canadian culture, finances and banking, and health insurance.

Important Information and Links
- Health Insurance
- All international and exchange students residing in Ontario during their period of study are required to have the appropriate health insurance coverage.
- There are two types of insurance:
- UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan)All international and exchange students residing in Ontario are required to purchase UHIP. For more details on this insurance plan, please visit the UHIP website or contact the York International team at UHIP@yorku.ca.
- SupplementalAll international students and exchange students studying for more than one term are required to purchase supplemental health and dental coverage.
- The type of insurance you require and the amount you will pay will depend on your level of study ( Graduate or Undergraduate ), length of study, and number of credit hours taken. Please see this link for a detailed look.
- Finances & Banking
- Students coming on exchange from one of our Partner Schools should pay tuition to their home institution.
- Work Permits
- Degree-seeking students may work off-campus for up to 20 hours per week on a study term and full-time on a break term with a valid off-campus work permit. You will be eligible to apply for an off-campus work permit after 6 months of full-time study.
- Students' spouses or common-law partners are eligible to apply for an open work permit.
- Upon completion of degree requirements, full-time students will be able to apply for a post-graduate work permit which is an open work permit valid for up to three years.
- Students must obtain a social insurance number in order to work in Canada and require a study permit and contract of employment or a work permit to apply.
- There are several permanent residency alternatives available to students planning to immigrate to Canada after completing their studies.
- Processing times vary by permit and are updated regularly on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada's Application Processing Times page.
- Study Permits
- International students must apply for a study permit before arriving in Canada. Please consult the study permit processing times for the average wait times by country based on a complete application. We recommend applying at least 3 months in advance of the start of your program.
- International students from the following countries require a temporary resident visa (visitor visa) to enter Canada. Students must apply to the visa office that serves their country of nationality and are advised to apply for a multiple entry visa.
- Exchange students studying for less than 6 months do not require a study permit.
- Students with a valid study permit may work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during a study term and full-time on a break term without a work permit.

Buddy Program
The Buddy Program at the Schulich School matches Year 1 & Year 2 students to help make the MBA experience as enriching as possible.
Computing Facilities & Computer Requirements
At the Academic & Career Planning session, you will receive a personalized e-mail account and Lotus Notes access information, vital for all communication during and after your program. Computing support for Schulich students is extensive. Computing requirements and instructions can be downloaded here.
Financial Assistance
Schulich offers extensive financial support to students. Information on Tuition Fees and Cost of Living for students is available on the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Web site. Please also see York's Current Students' Web site for information about York University support and links to government assistance.
Housing
On-Campus Housing
Furnished and unfurnished apartments are available for graduate students. See York's Student Housing Web site.
Off-Campus Housing
York University maintains a service for those students who require assistance in finding off-campus accommodation.
Security Services
York's Security Services partner with the community in order to create a campus environment that is safe for, and perceived as safe by students, faculty, staff and visitors to York. Some of the services offered by Security Services are blue light emergency phones, closed circuit television, road, watch, and security serives patrols. Security Services also offers a unique service called goSAFE. If you need to get from one point on-campus to another, a goSAFE staff member will meet you anywhere on campus and escort to your on-campus destination.
Transportation & Parking
York University is served by a number of public transit organizations. For details and links to the GO service, TTC, York Region Transit, and Parking, visit the University's Transportation Web site.
Books
Textbooks are available at the York University Bookstore. Online ordering (home-delivery only) and in-store purchase and pick-up are available. Visit the Bookstore web site for details on Textbooks. Be sure to order (or pick-up) your books in time for the start of classes. Store hours are also listed online.
Students taking courses at the downtown Miles S. Nadal Downtown Management Centre can pick up their textbooks at Books for Business at 120 Adelaide St. West.
Business Cards
Students with an active Lotus Notes and their student number account can now order Schulich business cards. Click here to order.
YU-card
At your first Academic & Career Planning session, your photo will be taken for the YU-card photo ID and class lists. Upon enrolment, the University will activate the card. The YU-card acts as your library card, and it may be requested by any University official as proof of registration. The cost is free but if lost, a $20 replacement fee will be charged.
The YU-card office is in Room 200, William Small Centre. See the YU-card site for more details. YU-cards are normally delivered to students at Launch Week (or Smart Start for Summer start students).
Lockers
Locker rentals for Schulich students commence on the first day of classes in September. Lockers tend to sell out quickly, usually on the first day. Visit Office Services, Room S030A to inquire about locker availability.

Meet with an academic advisor in the Student Services & International Relations unit to discuss program requirements, any challenges you may be experiencing, or simply to make sure you are on track. It is recommended that you regularly meet with an academic advisor during your time at Schulich. You can also contact the SSIR office for information about enrolment, fees & financial aid, exchange, and much more.
