The Dr. James Gillies Memorial Campaign
In Memory of Dr. James Gillies: A Legacy of Distinction
Dr. James Gillies, Founding Dean of the Faculty of Administrative Studies, now the Schulich School of Business, was a man of great vision and passion whose all-encompassing commitment to the entire Schulich community as a leader, a teacher, a pioneer, and a philanthropist among others has left an indelible mark in the history of the School.
Dr. Gillies’ vision guided the School from its infancy in 1965 when it first opened its doors to its sustained success today as Canada’s preeminent business school with more than 27,000 alumni working in over 90 countries. Dr. Gillies helped shape the School’s pioneering approach to management education from offering programs to improve management throughout all economic sectors, to the creation of one of the world’s first part-time MBA programs and first-of-its-kind specializations like the MBA/LLB degree and the Arts and Media Administration, and finally, to the introduction of the renowned “601” Strategic Study to the MBA program. In Dean Horváth’s words, “James Gillies’ legacy as a trailblazer in education is legendary.”
Dedicated to advancing student success and recognition, Dr. Gillies’ generous philanthropic support to the School established The James Gillies Award, which recognizes Master’s level students who are enrolled in their second-year of the MBA, IMBA or MPA programs and who have achieved high academic standing and demonstrated significant contribution to the community or university.
A true Renaissance man, Dr. Gillies’ legacy of distinction helped made Schulich the School that it is today – one that’s leading change in management education.
Thank you for celebrating the remarkable life of Dr. James Gillies with a contribution to this special memorial campaign at the Schulich School of Business. Memorial donations will be directed to The James Gillies Award endowed fund.

The Naomi Powlett Memorial Bench, dedicated June 10th, 2014
Naomi Powlett worked at York University for over 20 years and spent 18 of those years in Alumni Relations at the Schulich School of Business. Since November 2013, Staff, Faculty and Alumni have been raising funds to purchase a commemorative bench in honour of Naomi. This bench was successfully installed and dedicated at the Schulich School of Business, in Schulich’s Founder’s Courtyard, on June 10, 2014. The Ontario-made solid teak bench features a plaque recognizing Naomi. As a result of the generosity of the donors to date, as well as new commitments still being received, excess funds are being directed to a trust fund that will support the future establishment of a student award in memory of Naomi.
